Moving clubs is exciting — but it can also come with an unwelcome surprise in your first few payslips, if you end up on the wrong tax code.
When you move to a new club, your new employer needs certain information from HMRC to apply the correct tax code to your pay. Until that information comes through, they're required to deduct tax using a temporary "emergency" tax code — which is usually more conservative than your actual correct code, meaning you can end up paying more tax than you should in the short term.
This isn't unique to football, cricket or rugby — it happens across all kinds of employment changes — but the impact can feel more pronounced for professional sportspeople, since a transfer often coincides with other financial changes happening at once: signing fees, relocation costs, sometimes a completely different pay structure at the new club. An unexpectedly large tax deduction landing at the same time as all of that can be a genuine shock.
The good news is that this usually corrects itself. Once your new employer receives your correct tax code from HMRC — typically triggered once your previous employer's final pay information is processed — your tax code updates, and any overpaid tax is usually refunded automatically through your pay, or can be reclaimed directly if needed.
Where it's worth paying attention is if the emergency tax situation drags on longer than expected, or if you notice your payslips still don't look right after a couple of months at your new club. That's worth flagging and checking properly, rather than assuming it'll sort itself out indefinitely — sometimes it needs a nudge, particularly if there's been a more complex change in your circumstances alongside the transfer itself.
If you've had a transfer recently and you're not sure whether your tax situation has settled correctly, it's worth having someone who understands football finances specifically take a proper look, rather than guessing based on a payslip that doesn't quite add up.
